Decorating Debate: Area rugs on top of carpet? Yes or No?

Shag Area Rug| Modern Beach House RugIn last week’s decorating debate, we asked our facebook fans what they thought about using an area rug on top of carpet.

Here are the results:

25% of you said NO, many citing safety concerns (like tripping hazards) as part of your reasoning.  @DecoratingDiva said “@trendfunnel Too much layering for me, but then I’m not a huge fan of carpet to begin with.”

The remaining 75% of you said YES.  Fans said area rugs offer several solutions like they help to keep areas with heavy foot traffic clean and can break up a larger space and make it feel more cozy.   Elizabeth Mullins Soggs and Cindy Lee Bergersen both added how nice an area rug looks when layered on top of sisal.  Bergersen (aka @decodingdecor) said, “@trendfunnel: Yes! If a fine rug is too small, layering over a rt sized neutral wool or real sisal solves the problem & provides richness!”
