10 Quick Tips for Getting Started with Feng Shui

Advice and tips for using feng shuiFeng Shui is an energizing and easy way to facilitate positive change in your home and in your life. Here are 10 tips for getting started today with Feng Shui

10 Quick Tips for Getting Started with Feng Shui

1. Clarify your intentions.
Write out the changes you would like to make in your life. Do you want to change careers, enjoy better health, increase your wealth, or improve your relationships? Be specific - because your statements of intention will help you to create the physical reminders for what it is you want.

2. De-clutter and organize your space.
Clutter can cause you to feel “stuck,” overwhelmed, and unfocused. Get rid of things that you do not use, need, or love - and give them to others who can benefit from your “stuff.” You’ll begin to notice that things and opportunities - that you really do want and need - will begin to flow into your life. It is absolutely predictable.

3. Put safety and comfort first.
Give your home and office a safety and comfort test. Look for sharp corners, uncomfortable chairs, inadequate lighting, and computer cords that are in the way - and baby-proof your home and office for people of all ages. Insisting on your environmental comfort and safety becomes crucial to the balance and harmony of your entire life.

4. Live with what you love.
Take a moment to consider that all objects in your space trigger feelings - either positive or negative. All of your possessions - furniture, artwork, clothes, car, computer - hold certain thoughts, feelings, memories, and associations in place. Are these thoughts and feelings energizing or draining? Live with what you absolutely love - and you will feel more positive, supported, energized - and full of life!

5. Create physical spaces that reflect who you are and who you’re becoming.
The quality of your inner life is constantly influenced by your surroundings. Your environment affects you - perhaps more than you realize! Surround yourself with environmental affirmations of who you are today - versus whom you were 5, 10, or more years ago. Colors, furniture, artwork, photographs - even clothes - that reflect who you are now and who you’re becoming - will help to remind you of the positive changes that you want to make in your life.

6. Create a welcoming entrance.
The walkway to your front entryway should be a clear path that curves gently toward the door. No overgrown shrubs or tree branches should block the way or the view of your doorway. An open and welcoming pathway invites positive energy and opportunities to enter your household. And remember to create a welcoming entrance for yourself at the door you use the most - such as a side, back, or garage door entrance.

7. Always have a view of a room’s entryway.
Whether sitting on your sofa or lying in bed, make sure you can see the main doorway into the room. If you’re able to see people coming and going, you will automatically feel more at ease. As you place your furniture - in particular, your bed, desk, sofa, and stove - remember that having a view of the door is the safest, most comfortable, and most powerful place in the room. Notice that your pets will instinctively choose this “power position” for themselves.

8. Keep TVs and computers in their proper place!
Have you noticed that TVs and computers tend to command a lot of attention when visible in the room? For maximum rest and rejuvenation, remove TVs and computers - as well as desks and exercise equipment - from your bedroom. Or cover or screen them from the bed when not in use. To enhance conversation, relaxation, and serenity overall in your home, place TVs and computers behind closed doors - if possible - so they can disappear from sight whenever you wish.

9. Balance out the 5 elements in your home and office.
Make sure you have something representing each of the 5 Feng Shui elements - wood, fire, earth, metal, and water - in rooms where you spend the most time. No one element should be dominant. Some simple solutions might include: wooden bowls filled with colorful pebbles and a candle - represent wood, earth, and fire; a framed photograph of a landscape represents earth (the scenery) and metal (the frame); a bouquet of red roses represents fire (the color red), water (in the vase), and wood (the flowers). If all 5 elements are represented, a room will feel balanced - and you will feel centered.

10. Have fun with Feng Shui!
Perhaps most importantly - have fun with Feng Shui! It is an energizing and creative way to transform the spaces that you live and work in - and to make positive changes in your life! One of the principles of Feng Shui is to embrace and to go with the flow of change. So discover what you love and what feels best to you - by experimenting with different colors, furniture placement, artwork, and even clothing - and gain a fresh perspective on the world. And because 90% of the power of Feng Shui is intention - remember to re-visit your intentions periodically and to change them as needed. So, have fun with Feng Shui - knowing that it is not really about the sofa - it’s about expressing who you are now and who you’re becoming - Feng Shui is about your life!
